The man was nearly out of sight when the Frenchman suddenly found that his watch was gone. He thought that it must be the Italian who had taken his watch. 91.[阅读理解单项选择题]How men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations -- the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of word that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.

5 The author of the passage advises us ____.
A.to use words carefully and accurately
B.not to use silly and vulgar words
C.to become a master of words
    D.to use emotional words

At present he has a plan which he hopes will take him to Congress as a southern representative. Now in his first year at Harvard Law School, Reg is making careful plans. After earning his degree, he expects to return to the South to practice law among the poor. "I want to help them understand what their rights are and to help them achieve them," he says. Then he hopes to run for political office at the local and state level until he is ready to try for Congress.Reg grew up in a low-income Negro section of Birmingham, Alabama. Brought up by his grandparents after his parents were divorced while he was very young, Reg has been living through a period of far-reaching progress in race relations. In the summer of 1968 Reg himself became a good example of this progress when he became the first Negro student appointed to a special new program. The program introduces bright young students to the workings of the Georgia State government and encourages them to seek employment there after finishing their education. "I've been lucky," he says. "I seem to have been in the right place at the right time."But luck is only part of Reg's story, for he has made the most of opportunities that came his way. He learned to read in kindergarten and began visiting the public library regularly to borrow books. His grandparents encouraged him, though neither of them had much education, and they bought him a set of encyclopedias. "I loved those books," he re- members. "I used to come downstairs before breakfast and read short articles. I enjoyed reading about famous men, and then I would pretend to be one of them. I guess it was partly a childish game and partly an escape. It wasn't too much fun to be a Negro when I was a kid."While studying for his bachelor's degree at Morehouse College, Reg worked on several political campaigns helping candidates get elected to government offices. At the same time he maintained a "B" average while majoring in political science. He worked as a student advisor to earn extra money for his college expenses, and he was granted a scholarship for a year of study at the University of Valencia in Spain. With just two more years to complete at Harvard Law School, which also gave him a scholarship, Reg has made a good start on his professional career. He says, "The good life for me is the kind of life where I can find satisfaction in public service."

In order to communicate thoughts and feelings, there must be a conventional system of signs or symbols which mean the same to the sender and the receiver. The means of sending communications are too numerous and varied for systematic classification; therefore, the analysis must begin with the means of receiving communication. Reception of communication is achieved by our senses. Sight, hearing, and touch play the most important roles. Smell and taste play very limited roles, for they cannot receive intellectual expression from fully developed systems of signs and symbols.Examples of visual communication are gesture and mimicry. Although both frequently accompany speech, there are systems that rely solely on sight, such as those used by deaf and dumb persons. Another means of communicating visually is by signals of fire, smoke, flags, or flashing lights. Feelings may be simply communicated by touch, such as by handshaking or backslapping, although a highly developed system of handstroking has enabled blind, deaf, and dumb persons to communicate intelligently. Whistling to someone, applauding in a theater, and other forms of communication by sound rely upon the ear as a receiver. The most fully developed form of auditory communication is, of course, the spoken language. The means of communication mentioned so far have two features in common: they last only a short time, and the persons involved must be relatively close to each other. Therefore, all are restricted in time and space.
16 The author explains that he will deal with reception of communication first because ____.
A.communication actually takes place when the message is received
B.there are more means of receiving than of sending communications
C.reception of communication involves use of the senses.
D.it is difficult to list all the possible means of sending communications
17 Persons who cannot see, hear, or speak are able to communicate through a system of ____.
    A.gesturing
    B.handshaking
    C.backslapping
    D.handstroking
18 The author specifically mentions that speech is ____.
A.less important than the written form of language
    B.assisted by touch, gesture, etc
C.the only highly developed system of communication
D.the most developed form of communication based on hearing
19 Which of the following statements about communication by touch is TRUE?
A.Touch is less important than taste as a means of communication.
B.There is no well-developed system of communication based on touch.
C.It is possible to communicate intelligently by touch alone.
    D.Touch must accompany visual communication.
20 Which of the following statements about the ways of communicating ideas and feelings mentioned in the passage is FALSE?
A.They can be used to communicate over long distances.
B.They require both a sender and a receiver.
C.They involve use of conventional signs and symbols.
D.They utilize the senses for reception.
95.[阅读理解单项选择题]Some children are backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the cues and signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to mop up(吸收) language rapidly. There are critical times, it seems, when children learn more readily. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again. A bird learns to sing and to fly rapidly at the right time, but the process is slow and hard once the critical stage has passed.Linguists suggest that speech milestones are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ (Intelligence Quotient(智商). At twelve weeks a baby smiles and utters vowel-like sounds; at twelve months he can speak simple words and under- stand simple commands; at eighteen months he has a vocabulary of thirty to fifty words. At three he knows about 1000 words which he can put into sentences, and at four his language differs from that of his parents in style rather than grammar.Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about man's brain, compared with that for the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a teddy-bear with the sound pattern "teddy-bear". And even more incredible(不可思议) is the young brain's ability to pick out an order in language from the hubbub(喧哗) of sound around him, to analyse, to combine and recombine the parts of a language in novel ways. But speech has to be triggered(触发), and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the cues and signals in the child's babbling, (咿咿呀呀) clinging, grasping, crying, smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child's non-verbal cues is essential to the growth and development of language.
21 The reason some children are backward in speaking today is that ____.
A.they do not listen carefully to their mothers
B.their brains have to absorb too much language at once
C.their mothers do not respond to their attempts to speak
D.their mothers are not intelligent enough to help them
22 By "critical times" the author means ____.
A.difficult periods in the child's life
B.moments when the child becomes critical towards its mother
C.important stages in the child's development
D.times when mothers often neglect their children
23 Which of the following is NOT implied in the passage?
A.The faculty of speech is inborn in man.
B.Children do not need to be encouraged to speak.
C.The child's brain is highly selective.
D.Most children learn their language in definite stages.
24 It the mother does not respond to her child's signals ____.
A.the child will never be able to speak properly
B.the child will stop giving out signals
C.the child will invent a language of its own
D.the child will make little effort to speak
25 Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.By the age of a year and a half the child's vocabulary is still under 100 words.
B.By the age of four children still make many grammatical mistakes.
C.The author does not believe that children select and analyse their language.
D.All children of high IQ start to speak early.
96.[阅读理解单项选择题]When prices are low people will buy more, and when prices are high they will buy less. Every shopkeeper knows this. But at the same time, producers want higher prices for their goods when they make more goods. How can we find the best price for the goods? The Law of Supply and Demand is the economist's answer to this question.According to this law, changes in the prices of goods cause changes in supply and demand. An increase in the price of the goods causes an increase in supply--the number of goods the producers make. Producers will make more goods when they can get higher prices for the goods. The producer makes more shoes as the price of shoes goes up. At the same time, an increase in the price of the goods causes a decrease in demand--the number of goods the consumers buy. This is because people buy less when the price is high. People buy fewer shoes as the price of shoes goes up. Conversely, a decrease in the price causes an increase in demand (people buy more shoes) and a decrease in supply (producers make fewer shoes).Business firms look at both supply and demand when they make decisions about prices and production. They look for the equilibrium point where supply equals demand. At this point, the number of shoes produced is 3000 and the price of the shoes is $30. $30 is the equilibrium price: at this price the consumers will buy all of the 3000 shoes which the producers make. If the producers increase the price of the shoes, or if they produce more than 3000 shoes, the consumers will not buy all of the shoes. The producers will have a surplus(过剩) --more supply than demand--so they must decrease the price in order to sell all of the shoes. On the other hand, if they make fewer than 3000 shoes, there will be a shoes shortage--more demand than supply--and the price will go up.According to the Law of Supply and Demand, the equilibrium price is the best price for the goods. The consumers and the producers will agree on this price because it is the only price that helps them both equally.
26 Why does an increase in price cause an increase in supply?____
A.Consumers buy more goods when prices are high.
B.Producers make more goods when prices are high.
C.Producers want to sell all of their goods.
D.Consumers will not buy all of the goods.
27 Why does a decrease in prices cause an increase in demand?____
A.Consumers buy fewer goods when prices are low.
B.Producers make fewer goods when prices are low.
C.Producers make more goods when prices are high.
D.Consumers buy more goods when prices are low.
28 What do business firms look at when they make decisions about prices and production?____
    A.The supply curve.
    B.The demand curve.
    C.The equilibrium point.
    D.All of the above.
29 Why will consumers and producers agree on the equilibrium price?____
A.It will help them both equally.
B.It is the only price for the goods.
    C.It is the lowest price.
D.All of the goods will be sold.
30 When will producers have a surplus of goods?____
    A.When supply equals demand.
B.When there is more supply than demand.
C.When there is more demand than supply.
D.When they sell all of their goods.
97.[阅读理解单项选择题]Ants have outsmarted me on more than one occasion. In particular, there was a weekend last summer when an ant scientist was a guest at our cottage. I boasted to my naturalist friend that I could store food in an open container for a whole week and keep it safely out of the reach of house ants.Sunday night the experiment got under way. I put a large wooden tub on the kitchen floor of our cottage. After filling it to about the three-quarters mark with water, I placed a high wooden stand in the middle of it. On top of the stool, I put a saucer containing the bait: three or four pieces of rich chocolate candy.   Then I painted a wide band of very slow-drying glue around the outside of the wooden tub. With that, I stood back and admired my ant trap, fully confident that the bait would be untouched upon my return to the cottage the following weekend.   When my naturalist friend and I entered the cottage just six days later, ants were swarming over the bait!   Here's how they put me to shame. Single files of ants had marched head-on into the band of glue around the outside of the wooden tub. A handful of them had endured martyrdom, for they had embedded themselves end to end, and made causeways of their bodies. The tempting bait on top of the stool must have caused the little creatures to use their brains to the limit. Ants hate water, but they had been courageous enough to build a highway across the stretch of water to a leg of the stool. They had assembled tiny pieces of grass and bits of wood no longer than a thirty-second of an inch, and had glued them together with saliva until their bridge extended from shore to island. Once they reached the leg of the wooden stool, traffic was almost all one way toward the chocolate bait.   But there were some show-off fellows around, too; they were doing things which ants have been known to do very rarely. We noticed that a half dozen or so were walking across the ceiling, and when they came directly over the bait they let themselves fall squarely into the middle of their merry brothers.   It is little wonder that I have been on the trail of ants ever since, trying to trip them up or at least learn some of the special tactics that they use.
31 The writer wanted to convince his friend that____.
A.he knew more about ants than the scientist
B.he could keep ants away from food
C.ants are more intelligent than human beings
D.he could make experiments with ants
32 The experiment was carried out in____.
    A.the laboratory
    B.an unused shed
    C.the kitchen
    D.the living-room
33 When the writer and his friend entered the cottage six days later, they found____.
A.a lot of ants eating the chocolate candy
    B.dead ants everywhere
C.swarms of ants marching around the tub
D.swarms of ants walking across the ceiling
34 The bait was____.
A.in the middle of the water
    B.kept on the water
C.at the top of the tub
D.on a stool in the tub
35 The ants managed to get over glue by____.
    A.marching courageously across it
B.going round it in single files
    C.covering it with their bodies
D.making a bridge with grass and wood

During that period, the prospective marriage partners are supposed to learn enough about each other to decide whether or not they will be able to build a successful marriage. Today in America, it is common for people to live together as a way of preparing for marriage. The idea of an arranged marriage seems very old-fashioned indeed. But aren't all marriages arranged in one way or another? In the United States marriages are seldom formally arranged, but quite a lot of informal arranging goes on before two people become husband and wife. People who get married are introduced to each other by friends. These friends have already decided that the two people are right for each other and arrange for them to meet. In the United States this kind of arrangement is very common. Because friends have such great influence, their approval of a dating partner is very important.Families also exert open and subtle pressures on their children to influence their choices of marriage partners. Parents often arrange dates for their own children. One parent often tells a friend about her beautiful daughter or handsome son. Also, parents can meet the perfect marriage prospect for their son or daughter through business relationships. Since parents often assist their children financially, they feel that they have the right to help the bride and groom select where they will live, what type of furniture they will purchase, and what their life-style will be like.

Your brain waves slow down a bit too. This is called Stage 1 sleep. For the next half hour or so, as you relax more and more, you will drift down through Stage 2 and Stage 3 sleep. The lower your stage of sleep, the slower your brain waves will be.Then, about 40-60 minutes after you lose consciousness, you will have reached the deepest sleep of all. Your brain waves will show the delta rhythm. This is Stage 4 sleep. You may think that you stay at this deep fourth stage all the rest of the night, but that turns out not to be the case. Instead, about 80 minutes after you fall into sleep your activity cycle will increase slightly. The delta rhythm will disappear, to be replaced by the activity pattern of brain waves. Your eyes will begin to move around under your closed eyelids as if you were looking at something occurring in front of you. This period of Rapid Eye Movements lasts for some 8--15 minutes and is called REM sleep.During both light and deep sleep, the muscles in your body are relaxed but capable of movement. However, as you slip into REM sleep, a very odd thing occurs -- most of the voluntary muscles in your body become paralyzed. Although your brain shows very rapid bursts of neural activity during REM sleep, your body is incapable of moving.

    C.a relaxing of body muscles
D.an increase in the body's rhythm
100.[阅读理解单项选择题]A few years ago it was fashionable to speak of a generation gap, a division between young people and their elders. Parents complained that children did not show them proper respect and obedience, while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many critics argue that it is built into the fabric of our society. One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their won life-styles. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and approve of, and often to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their educations, move out of the family home at an early age, marry--or live with--people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents. In our upwardly mobile society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the ambitions that parents have for their children are another cause of the division between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other. Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become obsolete overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedoms and opportunities of our society, and in the rapid pace at which society changes.
46 The main idea of the first paragraph is that ____.

C.Parents place high hopes on their children.
D.Modern education makes them think differently.
49 In American society, young people often ____.
A.rely on their parents to make a life
B.stay with their parents in order to get an opportunity for higher education
C.seek the best advice from their parents
D.have very little in common with their parents

D.The generation gap should be avoidable in American society.
101.[阅读理解单项选择题]Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is "Don't!" But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are small. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a repertory company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, looking after the furniture, publicity, taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny. But young actors with the stage in their blood are happy, waiting for the chance of work with a better company, or perhaps in films or television.Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and tedious training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his big car. He told the chauffeur to stop, and he got out to speak to the girl. He asked her if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and at first she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took t he producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. Then an appointment was made for her to go to the studio the next day. The test was successful. They gave her elocution lessons and within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. Of course, she was given a more dramatic name, which is now world-famous. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!
51 The reason why young people should be discouraged from becoming actors is that ____.
    A.actors are very determined people
B.the course at the drama school lasts two years
    C.acting is very hard work
D.there are already too many actors
52 Why is an assistant stage manager's job difficult?____
A.Because he has to do everything.
B.Because he has to work long hours every day.
C.Because he will not be happy.
D.Because he has to wait for another chance.
53 Usually only students who ____are accepted.
    A.have received good education
    B.are hard-working
    C.are talented and promising
    D.are good-mannered
54 "Then she got angry and said she would call the police". This sentence shows that ____.
    A.She totally disbelieved the proposal
B.The man acted with an ill purpose
C.The man forced her into his big car
    D.She was a nervous woman
55 The phrase "once in a blue moon" refers to ____.
    A.once in a full moon
    B.once for a while
    C.once for a long time
    D.once and for all

He chooses, when he can, the method of the "controlled experiment". If he wants to find out the effect of light on growing plants, he takes many plants, as alike as possible. Some he stands in the sun, some in the shade, some in the dark; all the time keeping all other conditions (temperature, moisture, nourishment) the same. In this way, by keeping other conditions constant, and by varying the light only, the effect of light on the plants can be clearly seen. This method can be applied to a variety of situations. In the course of his inquiries the scientist may find what he thinks is one common explanation for an increasing number of facts. The explanation, if it seems consistently to fit various facts, is called a hypothesis. If a hypothesis continues to stand the test of numerous experiments and remains unshaken, it becomes a law.
56 In order to investigate the effect of light on growing plants the scientist____.
A.has to stand in the sun
B.can keep the same plants under different conditions of light
C.takes as many plants as possible
    D.both b and c
57 The word "constant" in the first paragraph means____.
    A.continual
    B.faithful
    C.various
    D.unchanging
58 What should be kept the same in a "controlled experiment"? ____
    A.All the factors.
    B.The common factors.
    C.The factor under investigation.
D.All factors except the one being investigated.
59 According to the passage, a hypothesis is____.
A.an explanation for a large number of facts likely to be accepted as a truth
B.a factor which explains the facts already known to the scientist
C.an explanation that stands the test of numerous experiments
D.a common explanation that will definitely become a law

The picture will be produced by Denise DiNovi and Demi Moore as a starting vehicle for Moore. In other recent deals, Fox has optioned Asimov's most popular novel series, "Foundation,' for Shekhar Kaput ("Elizabeth") to direct; Paramount is working on turning "End of Eternity" into a film that Ridley Scott ("Gladiator") will likely direct from a script by "Total Recall" co-writer Gary Goldman; and Sony Pictures Family Entertainment is developing into an animated film series "Norby, the Mixed Up Robot," a series of 10 children's novels that Asimov wrote with his wife Janet, who'll act as creative consultant. Most of the deals will be worth seven-figure paydays if the films get made.Asimov wrote more than 460 works in either book or short-story form. While he wrote some nonfiction and mysteries, his speciality was sci-fi, with futuristic stories that were alien-free and high on pro-humanistic themes. His work has influenced many prominent sci-fi filmmakers, but Asimov action had been sparse. The most recent adaptation was the Robin Williams picture "Bicentennial Man." Part of the reason was that Asimov' s sole passion was his books and his family. He was hardly pushy(进取心的) about getting his works adapted, known to grant film options for as little as $50.The catalyst for the surge in screen activity is that Asimov's estate is now represented by Crested By, a partnership created 1- 1/2 years ago by Vince Gerardis and Ralph Vicinanza, who currently handle the screen rights of about 200 major sci-fi, fantasy and horror authors.

Usually the question is asked of a man in action --- a man on the go, walking along the street, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He'll probably say, "Fine, I'm all right," but "you've put a bug in his ear" -- maybe now he's not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, or his walk, that he overlooked that morning. It starts him worrying a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else, "How do you feel?"Every question has its time and place. It's perfectly acceptable, for instance, to ask "How do you feel?" if you're visiting a close friend in the hospital, But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to make a train, or sitting at his desk working, it's no time to ask him that silly question. When George Bernard Shaw, the famous writer of plays was in his eighties, someone asked him "How do you feel?" Shaw put him in his place. "When you reach my age," he said, "either you feel all right or you're dead."
65 According to the writer, greetings, such as "How do you feel?" ____.
    A.show one's consideration for others
B.are a good way to make friends
C.are proper to ask a man in action
    D.generally make one feel uneasy

A.a man working at his desk
B.a person having lost a close friend
C.a stranger who looks somewhat worried
    D.a friend who is ill
67 The writer seems to feel that a busy man should ____.
    A.be praised for his efforts
    B.never be asked any question
    C.not be bothered
D.be discouraged from working so hard
68 George Bernard Shaw's reply in the passage shows his ____.
    A.cheerfulness
    B.cleverness
    C.ability
    D.politeness
69 “You've put a bug in his ear ”means that you've ____.
    A.made him laugh

105.[阅读理解单项选择题]It was the second semester of my freshmen year. After several drinks, a group of friends and I went out looking for a patty. The Only problem was that it was a dry campus tier weekend. But we still managed to find an off-campus party that was kicking. I still have no clue how I got there. When we got there, the party was already in full swing. They had a bar in a separate room in the house and roommate and I walked right over to it as soon as we saw it. And man, did they have cheap drinks So we were like "yeah let's have a few." Of course at that point we weren't thinking about how we were going to get back to our dorm. After two whiskey sours and two screw drivers, I was gone. I didn't realize that I was drunk until I hit my head on (the hard part of the couch) and felt absolutely no pain. One of my friends was trying to take my money away so I couldn't buy any more to drink. Not that it would have mattered anyway, as I was sneaking sips from other people' s drinks by then.An hour later, I was completely drunk, and we made a group decision to leave the party. One problem, though, no one knew how to get home, so I drunkenly said" I know how to get home. Thanks for the great party!"Of course, no one offered to walk us back. I guess they though that 8 girls, including 2 who were completely trashed, would be fine walking alone back to campus. And I guess they believed my drunken rambling, who knows.Luckily, I have a pretty good sense of direction and we walked the 4 to 6 blocks back to campus. My roommate and I couldn't walk that well so the walk seemed to take forever. Once we got back to campus, however, we met up with this guy who was going to take us to another frat party just off campus (across the street from campus, actually). I was all pumped to go but--first things first---all of us had to pee.So we stopped in a nearby dorm. One of my friends went in first and ended up overflowing the toilet (the funny thing is that she was stone sober). My drunk roommate and I then decided that we had to really pee and that we would just go back to our dorm.So the two of us wandered back to our dorm, making a short stop at the emergency phone to call a friend and tell hex that we were drunk. After that, we managed to get back to our dorm, without any problems.

The last part of his 122-mile-per-hour fall was broken by the branches of young pine trees, thick springy undergrowth, and finally deep snow. "It was rather like bouncing on a trampoline, " he recalled.   Sergeant Alkemade's experience is a dramatic rebuttal of the idea that people falling from great heights are dead before they hit the ground. Asphyxia, brought about by the speed of the fall, and heart failure through shock were thought to occur long before the final impact.   The fallacy of this belief has been amply (充分地) demonstrated by free-fall parachutists who regularly drop several miles before opening their parachutes. In 1960 Capt. Joseph Kittinger jumped from a balloon in the United States and fell 16 miles before opening his parachute. He landed conscious and unhurt.
75 According to the passage, Nicholas Alkemade ____.
A.was a German officer during the Second World War
B.had often jumped from a height of about 18, 000 feet
    C.was a British officer
D.calculated the height with a special instrument
76 Nicholas jumped out of his plane because ____.
    A.he was a good parachutist
B.he would otherwise be burned to death
C.he wanted to become a hero
D.the Royal Air Force instructed him to do so
77 Nicholas's experience was ____.
    A.only an experiment
B.just as he had expected it to be
    C.something painful and quick
    D.quite unimaginable
78 Which of the following in the passage was the name of Nicholas's plane? ____
    A.Lancaster
    B.Gunnery
    C.Trampoline
    D.Asphyxia
79 The passage tells us that Capt. Joseph Kittinger ____.
A.served as a pilot during the Second World War
B.did not believe that people would die if they jumped from a plane without parachutes
    C.made a successful free-fall land from a balloon
D.often forgot to open his parachute when jumping from a plane

They had accepted a telephone order to buy £ 100,000 worth of shares from a fifteen-year-old schoolboy (they thought he was twenty-one). The shares fell in value and the schoolboy was unable to pay up. The bank lost £ 20,000 on the deal which it cannot get back because, for one thing, this young speculator does not have the money and, for another, being under eighteen, he is not legally liable for his debts. If the shares had risen in value by the same amount that they fell, he would have pocketed £ 20,000 profit. Not bad for a fifteen-year-old. It certainly is better than delivering the morning newspaper. In another recent case, a boy of fourteen found, in his grandmother's house, a suitcase full of foreign banknotes. The clean, crisp, banknotes looked very convincing but they were now not used in their country of origin or anywhere else. This young boy headed straight to the nearest bank with his pockets filled with notes. The cashiers did not realise that the country in question had reduced the value of its currency by 90%. They exchanged the notes at their face value at the current exchange rate. In three days, before he was found out, he took £ 200,000 from nine different banks. Amazingly, he had already spent more than half of this on taxi- rides, restaurant meals, concert tickets and presents for his many new girlfriends (at least he was generous!) before the police caught up with him. Because he is also under eighteen the banks have kissed goodbye to a lot of money, and several cashiers have lost their jobs.Should we admire these youngsters for being enterprising and showing initiative or condemn them for their dishonesty? Maybe they had managed for years with tiny amounts of pocket money that they got from tight-listed parents. Maybe they had done Saturday jobs for peanuts. It is hardly surprising, given the expensive things that young people want to buy, such as fashionable running shoes and computer games, if they sometimes think up more imaginative ways of making money than delivering newspapers and baby-sitting. These lads saw the chance to make a lot of money and took it.Another recent story which should give us food for thought is the case of the man who paid his six-year-old daughter £ 300 a week pocket money. He then charged her for the food she ate and for her share of the rent and household bills. After paying for all this, she was left with a few coins for her piggy bank.. "She will soon learn the value of money," he said. "There's no such thing as a free lunch. Everything has to be paid for and the sooner she learns that the better." At the other extreme there are fond parents who provide free bed and board for their grown-up children. While even the most hard-hearted parents might hesitate to throw their children out on the streets, we all know of people in their late twenties who still shamelessly live off their parents. Surely there comes a time when every- one has to leave the parental nest, look after themselves and pay their own way in life. But when is it?
80 One of Britain's biggest banks recently ____
A.received a telephone order to buy shares for a twenty-one year old
B.lost a lot of money because the shares they bought fell in value
C.bought quite a lot of shares for a customer and caused him to lose money
D.lost money as its young customer did not have the money to pay his debts
81 According to the passage, the young customer would have ____
A.earned £ 20,000, if the shares had gone up in value by the same amount they fell
B.paid his debts, if he had had the money to do so
C.continued to cheat banks, if he had not been found out
D.to go to prison, if he did not pay the money back
82 The writer's attitude to the example of the two boys who cheated the banks is ____
    A.positive
    B.questioning
    C.neutral
    D.negative
83 The reason why the man paid his daughter £300 a week pocket money and then required her to pay for her living expenses was that he wanted her to learn ____
A.to bear the hardships of life
B.how to live comfortably on her own pocket money
    C.the value of money
    D.how to save money
84 It can be concluded from the article that the writer believes that ____
A.parents should give more pocket money to their children
B.children should leave the parental nest as soon as possible
    C.grown-up children should support themselves
D.children should learn to be economical

When Mrs. B. telephoned the store to ask about it, she was told that the rug had been lost and that the store would send her another.Weeks later, when Mrs. B. telephoned again, the store claimed that the second rug had been delivered and left on her front porch. She didn't believe this story, as she had been at home as usual, and her door bell was in good working order. However, the store promised her that a third rug would be delivered within a week. It wasn't. What could she do? How could she get action?   Mrs. B. did what many other Americans have done--with excellent results. She wrote a letter to the newspaper in her town, explaining her problem. A few days later her letter appeared in the newspaper, and this sentence was printed below it:   The store found a way to safely deliver your rug immediately after hearing from us.   In this age of machines, it is often hard to get action from businesses that have made mistakes. An individual person can complain, but his complaints may accomplish nothing. Luckily, newspapers now employ people to help with such problems, and the results are published in a special section of the paper.   Mrs. B's letter appeared in a column called MR. FIX-IT. During the same week the following letter from Mrs. J. was printed in the ACTION LINE column of another newspaper   "Many weeks ago I bought some living room furniture from the House and Garden Shop in Parkersville. They have set three delivery dates, and each time I had to stay home from work and wait for the truck, which never came. I have called the store at least fifteen times, and each time they have said they would look for the furniture. This has been going on for two months. I guess they are still looking. " The ACTION LINE writer's reply was printed below Mrs. J's letter: "They found it. The woman finally half-entered one of the buses and asked the driver if the bus she wanted stopped at that corner. The driver ignored her, so she repeated the question. Incredibly, he then closed the door -- on her arm -- and drove off.   The woman, her arm stuck in the door, trotted alongside the bus, shouting. Passengers said the driver stopped after almost a block only because they, too, were shouting.   When the driver finally did stop and opened the door, the woman jumped on the bus to get his badge number. Then he took off again and went another couple of blocks before other shouting passengers persuaded him to stop and let the woman off.   After the driver's bosses at the Chicago Transit Authority--a tax-supported governmental body -- heard of the incident, they looked into it and set his punishment: a five-day suspension without pay. That struck me as rather light.   But Bill Baxa, a CTA public-relations man, said, "That's a pretty harsh penalty. "   Five days off work is a harsh penalty for dragging a woman alongside a bus by her arm? Baxa said, "Any time you take money away from someone, it is a harsh punishment. The driver makes $14 an hour. Multiply that by 40 and you can see what he lost. "   Yes, that comes to $560, a tidy sum. But we know that people in the private sector are fired for far less every day. If the people who run the CTA think that the loss of a week's pay is more than enough, I offer them a sporting proposition: Give me a bus. Then have their wives stick their arms in the doorway of the bus, and I'll slam the door shut, stop the gas pedal and take them for a fast one-block jog. And I'll pay $560 to anyone who is bold enough to try it. Any takers? Mr. Baxa? Anybody? I didn't think so.
99 The nurse half-entered one of the buses because____.
A.the bus they wanted didn't stop there
B.she wanted the driver to stop the bus

B.the driver closed the door before she heard the answer
C.she was dragged by the bus driver
D.she wanted to get the driver's badge number
101 How many blocks was the woman away from the corner where she waited when the bus driver finally let her off? ____
    A.Almost one block.
    B.Almost two blocks.
    C.Probably three blocks.
    D.Probably five or six blocks.
102 The bus driver's punishment was____.
    A.being dismissed from the CTA
B.being out of work for a week
    C.paying a fine of $560
D.working without pay for five days
103 Why did the author offer a sporting proposition? ____
A.Because the CTA paid little attention to the incident.

We have to discuss realism and fantasy ( 幻想 ) in television advertising, and so we are looking for examples of distortions ( 歪曲 ) and falsehoods in television commercials. The question we are asking is, "Is the commercial true to life, or does it offer an unreal picture of the product? "Sylvester is keeping track of the distortions, and he already has quite a long list. He says that all housewives seem to live in lovely homes, dress beautifully, and love their household chores. They smile and boast about floor waxes and proudly display their dirty laundry, dusty tabletops, and filthy ovens. In addition, he has never seen men doing housework. Sylvester thinks that this view of family life is filled with distortions.   I am keeping track of the people who appear in the advertisements. I have found handsome men courting the All-American Girl, and they are always recommending brand X toothpaste or brand Y cologne. I see teenagers and children surrounded by their friends, having wonderful times at parties and at school, and they are usually enjoying large harmonious family gatherings. I think that these advertisements are also filled with fantasy.   Sylvester and I have concluded that much of American life is pictured unrealistically in commercials. Teenagers do not always have fun at parties, and very few people love doing chores. People do have problems, but few of these are ever shown in commercials. Instead, we watch Cinderella ( 灰姑娘 ) discover a miracle floor wax, finish the kitchen chores, and waltz off to the ball. Our heads are filled with these fantasies, and they also suggest that, for any problem, brand Z will provide the instant cure. Sylvester and I will have very few facts and a lot of fantasy to write about in our research reports.

" Of course, there are good reasons for being worried about the world's food supplies in the future. Nevertheless, not all the experts share these worries.   For one thing, although the world's population is rising fast, food production is keeping pace with it, even in developing countries. It is therefore argued that the main reason why people are hungry is not that there is a world food shortage but that methods of cultivation are not sufficiently advanced in some areas and the food is not fairly distributed ( 分配 ).   This does not mean, however, that our diet ( 饮食 ) will go on being the same. In many industrialized countries, people feed animals with grain to produce high-quality beef, even though the grain would feed the human population, and use fishmeal to fatten pigs to improve the quality of bacon. While not many of us would like fishmeal for lunch, its nutritional value is high and the unattractive fish it is made from can be presented to the public in colorful packets of fish fingers.   By the year 2000, many of these problems will have been solved. Scientists are already capable of making steaks from soy beans. It is quite obvious that there will still be enough to eat, if we are not too particular about where the food comes from and what it is made of.

These reactions start others: You may sweat more than normal or suffer from a stomachache or headache. Your field of vision narrows and becomes tunnel-like. Before you know it, you're having difficulty focusing."What I hear students say over and over again," says Dr. Trimble, who is working at the Psychological and Counseling Center at the University of Illinois, "is, 'My mind went blank.'"For a number of years, Dr. Trimble helped many students learn how to perform better during exams and to bring up their grades. Some of these students were interested in sharing what they learned and, with Trimble's help, began holding workshops on overcoming test anxiety. For many students, just being in a workshop with other sufferers made them feel better. They realized that they were not the only ones who had done poorly on tests because of tension. The workshops were so successful that they are still given. In the workshops, students are taught that anxiety is normal. You just have to prevent it from getting the best of you. The first step is to learn to relax. If before or during an examination you start to panic, stretch as hard as you can, tensing the muscles in your arms and legs; then suddenly relax all of them. This will help relieve tension. But keep in mind that you don't want to be too relaxed. Being completely relaxed is no better than being too tense. "If you are so calm you don't care how you do on an examination, you won't do well," Trimble says. "There is an optimum level of concern when you perform at your best. Some stress helps. There are people who can't take even slight stress. They have to learn that in a challenging situation, being anxiously excited is good and will help them to do better. But if they call it anxiety and say, 'It's going to hit me again, ' that will make them nervous and worried."As a student you must also realize that if you leave too much studying until a day or two before the examination, you can't do the impossible and learn it all. Instead, concentrate on what you can do and try to think what questions are likely to be asked and what you can do in the time left for studying. When you sit down to study, set a moderate pace and vary it by reading, writing notes, and going over any papers you have already written for the course, as well as the textbooks and notes you took in class. Review what you know. Take breaks and go to sleep early enough to get a good night's rest before the exam. You should also eat a moderate breakfast or lunch, avoiding drinks like coffee and stay away from fellow students who get tense. Panic spreads easily.Get to the exam room a few minutes early so that you will have a chance to familiarize yourself with the surroundings and get out your supplies. When the examination is handed out, read the directions twice and underline the significant instructions, making sure you understand them. Ask the teacher to explain if you don't. First answer the easiest questions, then go back to the more difficult. On essay questions, instead of starting right away, take a few minutes to organize your thoughts, make a brief outline, and then start off with a summary sentence. Keep working steadily, and even when time starts to run out, don't speed up.

They are no longer restricted by their environment, as they can live in the most hostile of deserts or the bitter cold of Antarctic.Human culture is heavily based on the earth's natural resources -- oil, coal and metals; soil, water and forests. Industrialized society is using increasing amounts of these resources each year. Governments and industrialists strive for economic growth -- for factories and mines to produce more each year than they did in the previous year. But fuels and metals and, to a lesser extent, the soil are nonrenewable resources. Once used they are gone forever. In many cases the lifetime of these resources is coming to an end.   Factories and machines create wastes. These wastes are poured into the atmosphere, the water and even into the soil. The damaging effect of this pollution is, in some cases, permanent. To reduce pollution creates further problems. Factories may have to be redesigned or even pulled down. This costs money and may mean loss of livelihood ( 生计 ) for many workers.   Modern technology is creating an additional problem -- it is making industry more and more automatic ( 自动化 ). This means that fewer and fewer people are needed to operate factories and offices. The consequent loss of jobs is a worldwide problem and western society is still struggling to find the answer.   This introduction gives you some idea of the topics to be discussed in detail in this chapter.

116.[阅读理解单项选择题]Parrots are becoming one of the most popular pets in America -- and for good reason. The parrot is an extraordinary bird that can be taught to talk, can be easily cared for, and can create a lively atmosphere anywhere. With the help of an energetic parrot owner, a parrot can develop an enormous vocabulary. In addition, a parrot can be trained to say "Pretty boy" or "Polly wants a cracker, " and it also can learn to whistle or sing. No matter what an owner decides to teach a bird, training a parrot takes much patience, but the reward is a stream of chatter. Another reason for the parrot's popularity is that this pet does not require much care. For example, even a spoiled parrot does not need a housesitter for the purpose of daily walks and daily feeding. In fact, a parrot owner may leave his or her pet with enough food for five days and have no fear that the parrot will overeat. Still another advantage of owning a parrot is its inexpensive food, including seeds, nuts, corn, and grain -- along with an apple, banana, or carrot. Perhaps the most likely reason the parrot is becoming such a well-liked pet is that it is a combination of tameness and wildness. Because the parrot can live in almost any environment, it makes a fine, tame companion for many people. In addition, because it can be easily trained, it is a delightful performer. At the same time, its colorful feathers give it an air of the mystery of the parrot's native home, the jungle. Thus, the parrot, once a highly valued gift presented to kings and noble families, is now appreciated by a growing number of people.

You enter the bathroom, you put the plug in, turn on the hot water, get into the bath, wash, sing, get out, dry yourself and exit. My aunt's approach was more epic(宏大的), like one of those long Eisenstein films where people seem to be climbing up the same flight of stairs forever. My aunt would first slowly collect her clean linen(亚麻布衬衫), so as to have it all ready for changing into after her bath. This involved sorting out her linen, which took up most of the morning. Sometimes she would find an old letter buried among her linen, become interested in the memories it aroused and have to postpone the bath until the next day. But if all went well, she would have a bite of lunch and start Phase Two around two o'clock.Phase Two was washing out the bath. She would wash the bath very thoroughly, rinse(冲洗) it with running cold water, rewash it and then carefully feel the whole surface with her fingers. If there was the slightest blemish, she would clean the whole bath out again. This took about an hour. Then she would fill the bath.By this time she was feeling a bit hungry and exhausted. So she would put on the kettle for a cup of tea. Several cups of tea and several cream crackers (her favourite food) later, she would go back to the bathroom. And find the water stone cold.

C.had polished it inside and outside
D.had made sure it was perfectly clean
118.[阅读理解单项选择题]Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is "Don't!". But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, publicity, taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny.Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. He stopped and got out to speak to the girl. He asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. The test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!
135 From the very beginning, the author puts it clearly that acting is a profession____.
    A.sought after by too many
    B.too difficult for young people
    C.for ambitious people only
    D.for young people only
136 Which of the following is NOT mentioned as part of an assistant stage manager's job? ____
    A.Play minor roles
B.Take care of the dress to be worn on the stage by an actor or actress.
    C.Help advertise plays.
    D.Collect tickets.
137 For someone who feels he must act, it is very likely that____.
A.he will become a film star at long last
B.he will become a stage manager
    C.he will be well paid
D.he will end up without any success
138 The film producer found Connie Pratt one morning when she was____.
    A.working in a bicycle factory
B.driving past him in her car
    C.going to a film studio
    D.waiting for a bus
139 A few weeks after the test, Connie Pratt found herself____.
A.the most famous actress of the world
B.playing the leading female role in a play
C.as famous as the greatest actor of the world
D.no less famous than the leading actor of the day
140 The concluding sentence "chances like this happen once in a blue moon" means____.
A.this is something which happens once in a while
B.this is a highly profitable chance
    C.this is something highly possible
D.this is a very rare chance
119.[阅读理解单项选择题]Reading time: 6 1/2 minutesRemembering My GrandparentsWhen memory began for me, my grandfather was past sixty -- a great tall man with thick hair becoming gray. He had black eyes and a straight nose which ended in a slightly flattened tip. Once he explained seriously to me that he got that flattened tip as a small child when he fell down and stepped On his nose. The little marks of laughter at the corners of his eyes were the product of a kindly and humorous nature. The years of work which had bent his shoulders had never dulled his humor nor his love of a joke. Everywhere he went, "Gramp" made friends easily. At the end of half an hour you felt you had known him all your life. I soon learned that he hated to give orders, but that when he had to, he tried to make his orders sound like suggestions. One July morning, as he was leaving to go to the cornfield, he said, "Edwin, you can pick up the potatoes in the field today if you want to do that." Then he drove away with his horses. The day passed, and I did not have any desire to pick up potatoes. Evening came and the potatoes were still in the field. Gramp, dusty and tired, led the horses to get their drink."How many bags of potatoes were there?" Gramp inquired."I don't know.""How many potatoes did you pick up?""I didn't pick any.""Not any! Why not?""You said I could pick them up if I wanted to. You didn't say I had to."In the next few minutes I learned a lesson I would not forget, when Gramp said I could if I wanted to, he meant that I should want to.My grandmother ("Gram") worked hard all day, washing clothes, cleaning the house, making butter, and even working in the field when help was scarce. In the evening, though, she was not too tired to read books from the community library. For more than forty years Gram read aloud to Gramp almost every evening. In this way she and Gramp learned about all the great battles of history and became familiar with the works of great authors and the lives of famous men.Gram hated cruelty and injustice. The injustices of history, even those of a thousand years before, angered her as much as the injustices of her own day.She also had a deep love of beauty. When she was almost seventy-five, and had gone to live with one of her daughters, she spent a delightful morning washing dishes because, as she said, the beautiful patterns on the dishes gave her pleasure. The birds, the flowers, the clouds -- all that was beautiful around her -- pleased her. She was like the father of the French painter, Millet, who used to gather grass and show it to his son, saying, "See how beautiful this is!"In a pioneer society it is the harder qualities of mind and character that are of value. The softer virtues are considered unnecessary. Men and women struggling daily to earn a living are unable, even for a moment, to forget the business of preserving their lives. Only unusual people, like my grandparents, manage to keep the softer qualities in a world of daily struggle.Such were the two people with whom I spent the months from June to September in the wonderful days of summer and youth.
141 We know that Grandpa's nose ____
A.was flattened because it had been stepped on

142 We learn from the passage that Grandpa ____
    A.loved to give orders
    B.liked making suggestions
    C.was friendly and humorous
D.was a serious and strict person
143 When Grandpa told the writer to pick up potatoes if he wanted to do that, he meant that ____
    A.he had to do it
B.he could do it if he wanted to
C.he could do it anytime he was ready
D.he did not really have to do so
144 The writer describes his Grandma as ____
A.someone who could find beauty in life
    B.a very obedient housewife
C.a woman who complained about the injustices of life
D.a woman who loved Millet's paintings
145 According to the passage, in the days of the writer's grandparents ____
A.it was difficult for people to keep the "soft qualities" of mind and character
B.most people understood how to appreciate the beautiful things in life
C.it was the "soft virtues" that were thought to be very important
D.only ordinary people managed to appreciate the beauty of nature
120.[阅读理解单项选择题]Advertising can be thought of "as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services". Advertising aims to increase people's awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method. Magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local markets. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Posters are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertising. There can be no doubt that the growth in advertising is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and patent medicines have been built up largely by advertising. We might ask whether the cost of advertising is paid for by the manufacturer or by the customer. Since advertising forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertising. However, if large scale advertising leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.   It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertising on sales. When the market is growing, advertising helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertising may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertising if they were not convinced of its value to them.
146 Advertising is often used to____.
    A.deceive customers
    B.increase production
    C.arouse suspicion
    D.push the sale
147 The word 'media' 1st paragraph refers to____.
    A.the press
    B.television

    A.replace exhibitions and markets
    B.attract possible customers
    C.offer fun and amusement
    D.provide cheap goods
149 Advertising is in the main paid for by____.
    A.the customer
    B.the manufacturer
    C.increased sales
    D.reduced prices
150 "Large scale" in the third paragraph means____.
    A.expensive
    B.well-balanced
    C.extensive
    D.colorful
