Suddenly he felt someone behind him. He turned his head and saw an Italian young man who quickly walked past him. The man was nearly out of sight when the Frenchman suddenly found that his watch was gone. He thought that it must be the Italian who had taken his watch. He decided to follow him and get back the watch. Soon the Frenchman caught up with the Italian. Neither of them understood the other’s language. The Frenchman frightened the Italian with his fist(拳头) and pointed at the Italian’s watch. In the end the Italian gave up his watch to the Frenchman. 22.[阅读理解]How men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations -- the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of word that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.
1According to the passage, words are ____.
    A.visual letters
    B.represented by sounds
C.represented either by sounds or letters
    D.signs called letters
2The power of words lies in their ____.
    A.beauty
    B.accuracy
    C.associations
    D.charm
3The secret of a writer's success is the use of words that ____.
A.recall to us the glad and sad events of our past
B.are arranged in a creative way
    C.are as beautiful as music
    D.agree with certain literary style
4The origin of language ____.
A.is reflected in sounds and letters
B.is handed down from generation to generation
C.dates back to the pre-historic period
D.is a problem not yet solved
5The author of the passage advises us ____.
A.to use words carefully and accurately
B.not to use silly and vulgar words
C.to become a master of words
    D.to use emotional words

24.[阅读理解]Reading time: 5 minutesThe True Story of a Young ManWhen Reginald Lindsay received a scholarship to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, what he wanted most was a good job with a good salary. But soon he became interested in the civil rights movement. At present he has a plan which he hopes will take him to Congress as a southern representative. Now in his first year at Harvard Law School, Reg is making careful plans. After earning his degree, he expects to return to the South to practice law among the poor. "I want to help them understand what their rights are and to help them achieve them," he says. Then he hopes to run for political office at the local and state level until he is ready to try for Congress.Reg grew up in a low-income Negro section of Birmingham, Alabama. Brought up by his grandparents after his parents were divorced while he was very young, Reg has been living through a period of far-reaching progress in race relations. In the summer of 1968 Reg himself became a good example of this progress when he became the first Negro student appointed to a special new program. The program introduces bright young students to the workings of the Georgia State government and encourages them to seek employment there after finishing their education. "I've been lucky," he says. "I seem to have been in the right place at the right time."But luck is only part of Reg's story, for he has made the most of opportunities that came his way. He learned to read in kindergarten and began visiting the public library regularly to borrow books. His grandparents encouraged him, though neither of them had much education, and they bought him a set of encyclopedias. "I loved those books," he re- members. "I used to come downstairs before breakfast and read short articles. I enjoyed reading about famous men, and then I would pretend to be one of them. I guess it was partly a childish game and partly an escape. It wasn't too much fun to be a Negro when I was a kid."While studying for his bachelor's degree at Morehouse College, Reg worked on several political campaigns helping candidates get elected to government offices. At the same time he maintained a "B" average while majoring in political science. He worked as a student advisor to earn extra money for his college expenses, and he was granted a scholarship for a year of study at the University of Valencia in Spain. With just two more years to complete at Harvard Law School, which also gave him a scholarship, Reg has made a good start on his professional career. He says, "The good life for me is the kind of life where I can find satisfaction in public service."

25.[阅读理解]When prices are low people will buy more, and when prices are high they will buy less. Every shopkeeper knows this. But at the same time, producers want higher prices for their goods when they make more goods. How can we find the best price for the goods? The Law of Supply and Demand is the economist's answer to this question.According to this law, changes in the prices of goods cause changes in supply and demand. An increase in the price of the goods causes an increase in supply--the number of goods the producers make. Producers will make more goods when they can get higher prices for the goods. The producer makes more shoes as the price of shoes goes up. At the same time, an increase in the price of the goods causes a decrease in demand--the number of goods the consumers buy. This is because people buy less when the price is high. People buy fewer shoes as the price of shoes goes up. Conversely, a decrease in the price causes an increase in demand (people buy more shoes) and a decrease in supply (producers make fewer shoes).Business firms look at both supply and demand when they make decisions about prices and production. They look for the equilibrium point where supply equals demand. At this point, the number of shoes produced is 3000 and the price of the shoes is $30. $30 is the equilibrium price: at this price the consumers will buy all of the 3000 shoes which the producers make. If the producers increase the price of the shoes, or if they produce more than 3000 shoes, the consumers will not buy all of the shoes. The producers will have a surplus(过剩) --more supply than demand--so they must decrease the price in order to sell all of the shoes. On the other hand, if they make fewer than 3000 shoes, there will be a shoes shortage--more demand than supply--and the price will go up.According to the Law of Supply and Demand, the equilibrium price is the best price for the goods. The consumers and the producers will agree on this price because it is the only price that helps them both equally.
16Why does a decrease in prices cause an increase in demand?____
A.Consumers buy fewer goods when prices are low.
B.Producers make fewer goods when prices are low.
C.Producers make more goods when prices are high.
D.Consumers buy more goods when prices are low.
17What do business firms look at when they make decisions about prices and production?____
    A.The supply curve.
    B.The demand curve.
    C.The equilibrium point.
    D.All of the above.
18Why will consumers and producers agree on the equilibrium price?____
A.It will help them both equally.
B.It is the only price for the goods.
    C.It is the lowest price.
D.All of the goods will be sold.
19Why does an increase in price cause an increase in supply?____
A.Consumers buy more goods when prices are high.
B.Producers make more goods when prices are high.
C.Producers want to sell all of their goods.
D.Consumers will not buy all of the goods.
20When will producers have a surplus of goods?____
    A.When supply equals demand.
B.When there is more supply than demand.
C.When there is more demand than supply.

26.[阅读理解]Rather than be burned to death in his blazing shell-torn Lancaster on a bombing raid over Germany in 1944, Royal Air Force Gunnery Sergeant Nicholas Alkemade jumped from 18, 000 feet without a parachute ( 降落伞 ), calculating that this would be a quicker and less painful death.Unbelievably, he suffered only slight injuries. The last part of his 122-mile-per-hour fall was broken by the branches of young pine trees, thick springy undergrowth, and finally deep snow. "It was rather like bouncing on a trampoline, " he recalled.   Sergeant Alkemade's experience is a dramatic rebuttal of the idea that people falling from great heights are dead before they hit the ground. Asphyxia, brought about by the speed of the fall, and heart failure through shock were thought to occur long before the final impact.   The fallacy of this belief has been amply (充分地) demonstrated by free-fall parachutists who regularly drop several miles before opening their parachutes. In 1960 Capt. Joseph Kittinger jumped from a balloon in the United States and fell 16 miles before opening his parachute. He landed conscious and unhurt.
21The passage tells us that Capt. Joseph Kittinger ____.
A.served as a pilot during the Second World War
B.did not believe that people would die if they jumped from a plane without parachutes
    C.made a successful free-fall land from a balloon
D.often forgot to open his parachute when jumping from a plane
22Which of the following in the passage was the name of Nicholas's plane? ____
    A.Lancaster
    B.Gunnery
    C.Trampoline
    D.Asphyxia
23According to the passage, Nicholas Alkemade ____.
A.was a German officer during the Second World War
B.had often jumped from a height of about 18, 000 feet
    C.was a British officer
D.calculated the height with a special instrument
24Nicholas's experience was ____.
    A.only an experiment
B.just as he had expected it to be
    C.something painful and quick
    D.quite unimaginable
25Nicholas jumped out of his plane because ____.
    A.he was a good parachutist
B.he would otherwise be burned to death
