StressMost people feel stress at some time in their lives. Some people like this pressure and work better because of it. Other people are not comfortable with any stress at all; they soon become unhappy (1)if they feel stress. Sometimes stress can lead people to do things they wouldn’t usually do, such as overeat, smoke, drink, or use drugs. Stress, however, is a very normal part of life.
It is important to understand (2)that stress doesn’t come from an event itself; that is, from the things that are happening in our lives. It comes from the meaning we give to what has happened. For example, a crying baby may be stressful to one person, but it may not bother another person at all; a traffic jam may be stressful to one person (3)while another person may be able to stay calm.
We can experience stress any time we feel we don’t have control. It can come from a feeling (4)that we can’t do anything about a situation. Basically, it is the body’s way of showing anxiety or worry.
Stress is not just caused by our mental or emotional condition. It is also influenced by how tired we are, whether we have a balanced diet with enough vitamins and minerals, whether we get enough physical exercise, and (5)whether we can relax.
The point at which stress becomes a problem changes from day to day, even for the same person. In some situations, if we are rested and feel good about ourselves, a little stress will not be a problem. In another situation, if we are tired or feel unsure about our abilities, even a small amount of stress can cause problems. For example, we might begin to worry about things that haven’t happened yet instead of working on things that are happening now. Or we might not feel able to find solutions to everyday problems.(1) A. 状语从句——表示对比 B. 状语从句——表示条件

Holidays and Special DaysChristmas is by far the most important holiday in English-speaking countries. Other important holidays in addition to Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day are Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, April Fools’ Day, and Easter. On Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14, people give cards, chocolates, flowers, and kisses to their spouses and sweethearts. On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, people wear green to celebrate the luck of the Irish, and eat corned beef and cabbage washed down with green beer. During Easter Week in late March or early April, Christians remember the death and resurrection of Jesus (6)while Jews celebrate Passover, in memory of the escape of the Jews from ancient Egypt, (7)where they had been slaves. (8)Although it is not actually a holiday and has no religious connotation, April Fools’ Day, celebrated on April 1, is a day when people play embarrassing tricks on their friends and colleagues and even on their teachers. Another holiday with some similarity to April Fools’ Day is Halloween on October 31, (9)when children wear funny or scary costumes and ask their neighbors for “tricks or treats”. The name Halloween means “hallowed evening”, the night before All Saints’ Day when Christian saints are honored. On the following day, All Souls’ Day, services and prayers are said for the dead. In many countries, it is a day when families visit cemeteries and place flowers on the tombs of their relatives. In Europe, Labor Day is celebrated on May 1, (10)whereas in Canada and the United States, labor and laborers are honored by a legal holiday on the first Monday in September.(6) A. 状语从句——表示对比B. 定语从句——表示时间
