31.[单选题] It is difficult to imagine what life would be like without memory. The meanings of thousands of everyday perceptions, the bases for the decisions we make, and the roots of our habits and skills are to be found in our past experiences, which are brought into the present by memory.
Memory can be defined as the capacity to keep information available for later use. It includes not only “remembering” things like arithmetic or historical facts, but also involves any change in the way an animal typically behaves. Memory is involved when a rat gives up eating grain because he has sniffed something suspicious in the grain pile. Memory is also involved when a six-year-old child learns to swing a baseball bat.
Memory exists not only in humans and animals but also in some physical objects and machines. Computers, for example, contain devices for storing data for later use. It is interesting to compare the memory-storage capacity of a computer with that of a human being. The instant-access memory of a large computer may hold up to 100,000 “words”―ready for instant use. An average U.S. teenager probably recognizes the meaning of about 100,000 words of English. However, this is but a fraction of the total amount of information which the teenager has stored. Consider, for example, the number of faces and places that the teenager can recognize on sight.
The use of words is the basis of the advanced problem-solving intelligence of human beings. A large part of a person’s memory is in terms of words and combinations of words.

A.Because his memory tells him the smell of the grain is unusual.
B.Because he has found something poisonous in the grain.
C.Because the smell of the grain is unpleasant.
D.Because something has gone wrong with his memory.
    E.“expressed by”
    F.“consisting”
    G.“by means of”
    H.“in connection with”
    I.A person’s memory is different from an animal’s or a computer’s.
J.A person cannot live well without sound memory.
BA.It is terrible to lose memory.
BB.Memory is of vital importance to life.
BC.the data mainly consisting of words and combinations of words
BD.an ability to store experiences for future use
BE.the basis for decision making and problem solving
BF.an intelligence typically possessed by human beings
    BG.both A and B
BH.the computer’s memory capacity is much smaller than an adult human being’s
    BI.the computer’s memory has a little bigger capacity than a teenager’s
BJ.the computer’s memory capacity is much smaller even than a teenager’s
32.[单选题] There are two factors which determine an individual’s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is brought up. If an individual is handicapped environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.
The importance of environment in determining an individual’s intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster homes. Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark’s I. Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.

    A.Intelligence and Environment

    D.How the Brain Influences Intelligence
    E.can be predicted at birth
    F.can be increased by education
    G.is determined by his childhood
H.stays the same throughout his life
I.environment is crucial in determining a person’s intelligence
    J.human brains differ considerably
BA.the brain a person is born with is important in determining his intelligence
BB.persons having identical brains will have roughly the same intelligence
    BC.100
    BD.125
    BE.85

    BF.110
BG.an individual intelligence is determined only by his environment
BH.changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain
BI.lack of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligence
BJ.individuals with identical brains seldom test at the same level
33.[单选题] Mistakes are the things that nobody wants, but we still make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. Some are about work or jobs. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it as a friend? Or did he envy my luck? And why didn’t Andy pick up that I was friendly just because I had a car?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. We need to listen and think for some time. And if we don’t really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog” That’s being friendly. But “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little, what he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.
“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’ words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

A.people tend to be annoyed when we check what they say
B.people usually state one thing but mean another
C.we tend to doubt what our friends say
D.we fail to listen carefully when they talk
    E.philosopher
    F.teacher
    G.psychologist
    H.doctor
I.how to interpret what people say
J.why we go wrong with people sometimes
BA.what to do when you listen to others talking
BB.how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with people
BC.take a good look at the person talking
BD.notice the way the person is talking
BE.examine the real meaning of what he says based on his manner, his tone and his posture
BF.mind his tone, his posture and the look in his eyes
    BG.a bit of envy
    BH.lucky dog
    BI.being friendly
    BJ.your luck
34.[单选题] In 1799, George Washington, in a letter written only two days before his death, strongly urged the establishment of a military academy. Three years later, the United States Military Academy opened with ten cadets. By 1902, the Corps of Cadets had increased to nearly 2,500.
Each July, a new class enters the Military Academy. These new cadets come from cities and farms, their fathers are mechanics, farmers, and lawyers — the men of America. A young man need not be a “genius” or a star athlete to qualify for West Point. The standards are fairly high; but any healthy, normally intelligent American male between the ages of 17 and 21, with proper preparation, can qualify. He must be a citizen of the United States and must be of good moral character. He must never have been married.
A cadet soon learns that he is on his own, and that only by character, ability and effort can he get ahead at West Point. Each cadet must prepare himself for a reading at each class attendance. He is marked on this reading. This system, instituted by Colonel Sylvanus Thayer in 1817, helps develop in the cadet a confidence in his own abilities. Instructors are glad to give assistance, but only after the cadet has done the original thinking.
Although approximately 40 per cent of the cadet’s schooling is taken up by military training, the Military Academy offers a balanced program of science and arts courses, which leads to the granting of a Bachelor of Science degree upon graduation.

A.prize from the United States Army
B.better education than he could obtain anywhere else

    D.life of adventure and excitement
E.was a matter of grave concern to mechanics, farmers, and lawyers

35.[单选题] Britain almost more than any other country in the world must seriously face the problem of building upwards, that is to say, of accommodating a considerable proportion of its population in high blocks of flats. It is said that the English man objects to this type of existence, but if the case is such, he does in fact differ from the inhabitants of most countries of the world today. In the past our own blocks of flats have been associated with the lower-income groups and they have lacked the obvious provisions, such as central heating, constant hot water supply, electrically operated lifts from top to bottom, and so on, as well as such details, important notwithstanding, as easy facilities for disposal of dust and rubbish and storage places for baby carriages in the ground floor, playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings, and drying grounds for washing. It is likely that the dispute regarding flats versus individual houses will continue to rage on for a long time as far as Britain is concerned. And it is unfortunate that there should be hot feelings on both sides whenever this subject is raised. Those who oppose the building of flats base their case primarily on the assumption that everyone prefers an individual home and on the high cost per unit of accommodation. The latter ignores the higher cost of providing full services to a scattered community and the cost in both money and time of the journeys to work for the suburban resident.

A.they believe people like to live in houses with gardens
B.the living expenses for each individual family are higher
C.it involves higher cost compared with the building of houses
D.the disposal of rubbish remains a problem for those living in flats
E.modern flats still fail to provide the necessary facilities for living
F.English people, like most people in other countries, dislike living in flats
G.people in Britain are forced to move into high blocks of flats
H.people in most countries of the world today are not opposed to living in flats
I.have to pay a lot of money to employ people to do service work

J.have to spend more money and time traveling to work every day?
BA.take longer time to know each other because they are a scattered community
BB.do not have access to easy facilities because they live away from the city
BC.They were mostly inhabited by people who did not earn much.
BD.They provided playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings.
BE.They were usually not large enough to accommodate big families.
BF.They were sold to people before necessary facilities were installed.
    BG.encourage people greatly
    BH.be in fashion
    BI.develop with great force
    BJ.be ignored
36.[多选题] Most parents, I suppose, have had the experience of reading a bedtime story to their children. And they must have __1__ how difficult it is to write a good children’s book. Either the author has aimed too high, so that the children can’t follow what is in his (or more often, her) story, __2__ the story seems to be talking to the readers. The best children’s books are neither very difficult nor very simple, and satisfy both the __3__ who hears the story and the adult who reads it. Unfortunately, there are in fact __4__ books like this, so the problem of finding the right bedtime story is not __5__ to solve. This may be why many of books regarded as works of children’s literature were in fact written for __6__. “Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland” is perhaps the most obvious of this.
Children, left for themselves, often show the worst possible interest in literature. Just leave a child in bookshop or __7__ and he will more willingly choose the books written in an imaginative way, or have a look at most children’s comics, full of the stories and jokes which are the __8__ of teachers and right-thinking parents.
Perhaps we parents should stop trying to brainwash children into __9__ our taste in literature. After all children and adults are so different that we parents should not expect that they will enjoy the __10__ books. So I suppose we’ll just have to compromise over that bedtime story.

38.[多选题] One of the easiest things in the world is to become a fault-finder. However, life can be __1__ when you are not busy finding fault with it.
Several years ago I __2__ a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a world-class fault-finder, almost always bothered by things. People were always doing things that annoyed her, and __3__ was ever good enough. She was highly self-critical and also found fault with her friends. She became a really boring person.
Unfortunately, it took a horrible accident to change her __4__. Her best friend was seriously hurt in a car crash. What made it almost impossible to deal with was that the day before the __5__, Kerry had visited her friend and had spent the whole time criticizing her choice of boyfriends, the way she was living, the way she related to her mother, and various other things she felt she needed to __6__.
It wasn’t until her friend was badly hurt that Kerry became aware of her habit of finding fault. Very quickly, she learned to appreciate life rather than to __7__ everything so harshly. She was able to transfer her new wisdom to other parts of her life as well.
Perhaps most of us aren’t as extreme as fault-finding, but when we’re honest, we can be sharply __8__ of the world. I’m not suggesting you ignore problems, or that you pretend things are better than they are, but simply that you learn to allow things to be as they are—__9__ most of the time, and especially when it’s not a really big deal.
Train yourself to “bite your tongue”, and with a little __10__, you’ll get really good at letting things go. And when you do, you’ll get back your enthusiasm and love for life.
