24.[问答题] Some instructors give you one or two weeks of reading assignments from your textbook at once. They expect you to budget your reading time. Because you know you cannot read and remember everything you should, as we have said, try to divide your assignments into short reading sections. You have to judge how long it will take you to do each part. Do not try to read an entire chapter in one gulp. Take your time and concern yourself with only one part. When you are certain you understand that part, then go on to the next. Our minds like to wander. Our attention spans are short. So if we try to read only parts of an assignment, then stop to ask ourselves what we have just read, or take some notes to help aid comprehension, we are actually controlling our minds. That is why it is better to read from one heading in a chapter to the next and then stop. Think about what you just read. If there is a “fuzzy” area, go back and reread that part. Then read from the new heading to the next. Then stop and think again about what you read and make some notes. Doing so focuses attention on the content, and the result is better comprehension and control over mind-wandering.Some instructors give a lot of reading assignments at once so that you can ________.

25.[问答题] In this part there is a short passage with five questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements within 10 words.
A favorite story among acoustical experts concerns a noisy Long Island suburb where, day and night, huge trucks rumbled down a freeway, jet planes zoomed overhead, and a pumping station maintained a low, continuous thumping. One night all mechanical sounds stopped briefly; immediately half the people in the neighborhood awoke, sat bolt upright, and exclaimed: “What was that?”
Americans are drowning in noise, one of the unwanted and unnecessary waste products of the twentieth century. Scientists speak of noise in decibels — units by which they measure the intensity levels of the sound waves that beat against our eardrums. The shuffling of paper in silent surroundings represents about 15 decibels; a low conversation, 40 decibels; and the honk of an automobile horn, 90 decibels. In general, sounds above 80 decibels begin to grate harshly upon the human ear. Noise also causes increased muscular tension, which at night may deprive the body of rest.
Experiments have shown that 160 decibels of noise are lethal for small fur-bearing animals. Although equal exposure is not lethal to man, it may destroy hearing. Over the past thirty years the loudest sounds to which man has been exposed have increased from 120 decibels, the equivalent of the roar of a two-engine propeller plane, to 150 decibels, the blast of a four-engine jet. This is an average increase in volume of one decibel a year, and constitutes a potentially dangerous source of physical damage.

Questions:
1. The author cites the story about a Long Island suburb in the passage to illustrate that ___________.
2.The lowest limit of noise that our ears can’t bear is _____________.
3. The word “lethal” (Paragraph 3) means “_____________”.
4. According to this passage, in theUnited Statesnoise has in recent years become ____________.
5. This passage is meant to suggest _____________.
