There are about 6 billion people living on Planet Earth today. Out of this huge number only about 100 men and women have actually seen what our planet looks like from outer space. This small group of people are the astronauts who have had the privilege to view the world from their spaceships, or from the moon.
For centuries, the rest of us have relied on maps to show us what the world looks like. Maps play a very important role in everyday life. It is not only explorers, long distance lorry drivers and geography teachers and students who use maps. You only have to open a newspaper or watch the news on TV to see how frequently maps are used to point out the location of a story.
In the past, some of the maps drawn up were not accurate; sometimes they even omitted whole continents. The variety of maps in use today can look quite different, depending on where they are centered. In Britain, for example, the British are used to seeing world maps centre on Europe, so that the British Isles are in the centre of the map. This gives a rather distorted view of the world.
26. Who have seen the world from outer space?
A. Astronauts.
B. Explorers.
C. Drivers.
D. Teachers and students.
27. Who use maps?
A. Nearly everyone.
B. Astronauts.
C. Explorers, long distance lorry drivers and geography teachers and students.
D. 200 men and women.
28. How do ordinary people know what our earth looks like?
A. Watching TV.
B. Reading newspaper.
C. Listening to the radio.
D. Using map.
29. What was wrong with maps in the past?
A. They centered on British Isles.
B. They centered on Europe.
C. Some of them were not accurate.
D. Wrong continents were drawn.
30. Which of the following statements is not true?
A. We often use maps in our daily life.
B. Only a few people have seen the world from outer space.
C. Maps always give us an accurate picture of what the earth looks like.
D. British people have a distorted view of the world when looking at a map.
College is a new and different life for me. I’m away from home, so I have many things to adjust to. Being on my own, talking with friendly people, and having Fridays off (星期五不上课)— these are just some things I like about college. But more importantly, living at college gives me a sense of responsibility (责任感). My parents aren’t around to say “ No, Mary! You’re not going out tonight” or “Did you finish your assignment?” I have to make decisions about everything. I mean I have to cope with all the things on my own. For example, I had to open an account (到银行开户头) , but I didn’t know where the bank was. A friend of mine told me that I could look in the phone book. Yes, that’s an easy way to do what you wanted. I went to the bank and made decisions for myself — whether to have a checking or savings account and whether or not to get a Master card. That is one example of having responsibility.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Activities in college.
B. Sense of responsibility.
C. Living on one’s own.
D. My college life: a new experience.
32. All the following are mentioned to show what the author’s like (喜欢) about college, EXCEPT _______________________
A. Talking with friendly people.
B. A sense of being on her own.
C. Having no class on Fridays.
D. Missing home.
33. The author seems to be proud of _______________________
A. Being a college student.
B. Making her own decisions.
C. Being away from her parents.
D. Opening an account in a famous bank.
34. The easy way to look for a bank is to _________________________
A. Ask one of the friends.
B. Look in the phone book.
C. Phone the bank.
D. Look for it in the street.
35. Which of the following statements is true?
A. There were many things for the author to adjust to when she first came to college.
B. The author didn’t have a bank account while she was at home.
C. When the author was at home, she did everything for herself.
D. The author had to go out and look for a bank.
