Twenty Joke Menthols, Please
 1. I suspect that I am not the only man (不是唯一这样想的人,意思是许多人像我这样) who, every time he buys a packet of cigarettes, thinks of it … as the last one. (lines 1-2)
 2. I live permanently in the middle of a three-week period when(相当于during which)things are a bit hectic; they\`ve been a bit hectic for ten days, and I should have gone through the worst of it in another ten days. (lines 2-4)
3. Indeed by the time I have got through this very packet, I shall be within sight of easier times… I shall be real( 这里的意思是,我现在的情况是反常的,是不真实的,三周之后我就是真实的自我了), a holy content (这可以说是香烟的反义词)will suffuse me. I simply shan\`t want to smoke any more. (lines 5-8)
4. So it is quite a pleasant feeling, buying this last packet.(line 9)这里的 it 指代的是后面的动名词短语 buying this last packet
5. In fact, I suffer from a mild delusion that(引导同位语从句)I am giving up smoking all the time:(line 13)
 这就是为什么后面在第21行和第37行出现 \`my non-smoking\` 和 \`the distracted moments of the non-smoker\` 这样的词组的原因。
6. And as with other and more violent delusions, long habituation has enabled me to live a perfectly happy, indeed a rather snug life with two perfectly opposite outlooks (lines 13-15)
7. In a way I can quite see what it (it 是形式主语, 指代不定式短语 to think that)is like to think, with one part of one\`s mind, that one is a poached egg, while with another part one does things that(后面是定语从句) /one knows/ no poached egg could attempt, such as playing the piano or getting on a bus. (lines 15-18)
8. And, just as(正如)there must be sudden terrible moments when one stands right outside the whole thing, when one realizes that this whole poached-egg business must cease, so(也)do I experience sudden cold blasts of reality about my non-smoking. (lines 18-21)
 9. For instance, I have just been shaken by the extraordinary, the idiotic number and variety of articles in the drawer where I keep all my non-smoking devices and subterfuges…(lines 22-4)
This is an example of experiencing \`sudden cold blasts of reality about my non-smoking\`.
The fact that I\`ve tried in vain so many non-smoking devices suddenly makes me aware that I\`ve failed to give up smoking.
 10. It was really the addition to them, this week, of my latest failure, a useless little cigarette-rolling machine, which somehow transformed this drawerful into a significant and crazy museum collection.(lines 26-8)
这是强调句型,强调的是作为主语的 the addition of my latest failure.
注意动词 transform A into B 的句型。
 11. I spent hours poking in them with peculiar instruments, one of which is incised with the words(2)Pipe Reamer(在原文的排版中这个词组是跨行的), and I see that in one of the distracted moments of the non-smoker (在我神智错乱地以为自己是非吸烟者的某一刻)I have scratched another letter so that it now says Pipe Dreamer. (D + Reamer = Dreamer)(lines 35-8)
 12. It looks like dried lavender(干燥的熏衣草)and pounded bird\`s nests(被捣碎的鸟巢), and when(it is)first lit(这是 light 的过去分词)causes a thin cracking flame to rise from the pipe.(lines 41-2)
 13. Also bad for the tongue is(5)The Joke Menthol Cigarette (在原文的排版中这个句子是跨行的) since the air hole in the celluloid thing(过滤嘴) holding(分词短语作定语)the crystals lets them escape into my mouth. I don\`t think one should eat menthol.(lines 47-9)
 14. … like a tiny pillow with all the stuffing (枕芯填充物)pushed out of the middle (lines 53-4)
 15. All have loose ends(松散的端头), all come unstuck(作表语,意思是散开) on my lips.
